About SMARTT

What is SMARTT?

SMARTT, the official journal of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (APOSSM) and the Japanese Orthopaedic Society for Knee, Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine (JOSKAS), is an open access, peer-reviewed online journal publishing articles on all aspects of general sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine and rehabilitation. The journal aims to inspire clinicians, practitioners, scientists and engineers to work towards a common goal to improve the quality of life in the international community of athletes.

SMARTT is affiliated with the five other societies.

Sports Medicine is itself a field that has cross-discipline dimensions and includes specific fields of sports traumatology, cardiology, endocrinology, accident and emergency medicine, physiology, biochemistry and biomechanics. Whilst each of these fields serves a specific domain, they all provide important contributions to the overall care of athletes.

Arthroscopy is the key to minimally invasive interventions for sports trauma. Recent advancements in skills and technology have allowed significant developments in this area, driving arthroscopy to the forefront of surgical development in sports traumatology.

Rehabilitation is an integral part of the overall management of sports trauma. It entails a comprehensive program of treatment with the allied health professionals, performance optimization, preventive measures and outcome evaluation.

Therapy embraces all modalities of surgical treatment related to arthroplasty and sports injuries with specific reference to major joints such as knee, shoulder and ankle. This includes osteotomy, total joint replacement, minimally invasive examination and surgery, and computer assisted surgery.

Technology is of vital importance to biomechanical and biological research areas of arthroplasty and sports medicine, allowing new ideas to be tested, developed and applied in the field.

Multidisciplinary research with collaboration amongst clinicians and scientists from different disciplines will be the trend in the coming decades. SMARTT provides a platform for exchange of new clinical and scientific information in the most precise and expeditious way to achieve timely dissemination of information and cross-fertilization of ideas.

Content overview

SMARTT considers the following types of articles:

  • Research: reports of data from original research.
  • Reviews: ocomprehensive, authoritative, descriptions of any subject within the journal's scope. Reviews can cover any topical themes such as basic science and clinical reviews, ethics, pro/con debates, equipment reviews and thematic series to highlight specific topics in the field.
  • Case reports: reports of clinical cases that can be educational, describe a diagnostic or therapeutic dilemma, suggest an association, or present an important adverse reaction. All case report articles should indicate that informed consent to publish the information was granted from the patients or their guardians.
  • Commentary articles: short, focused and opinionated articles on any subject within the journal's scope. These articles focus on specific issues and are about 800 words.
  • Debate articles: present an argument that is not essentially based on practical research. Debate articles can report on all aspects of the subject including sociological and ethical aspects.
  • Short reports: brief reports of data from original research.

Peer review policy

After screening for general suitability, submitted manuscripts will be assigned to three reviewers within a closed peer-review system. The reviewers will be asked to submit their reports within three weeks. After receipt of the recommendation from the reviewers, the Editors-in-Chief will decide whether to accept (outright or subject to revisions) or reject manuscripts.

Edited by K. M. Chan and Masahiro Kurosaka, SMARTT is supported by an expert Editorial Board.

Publishing in SMARTT

All articles are listed in PubMed immediately upon acceptance (after peer review), and are covered by PubMed Central.

Articles in SMARTT should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. However, because articles in this journal are not printed, they do not have page numbers. Instead, they have a unique article number.

The following citation:

Sports Med Arthrosc Rehabil Ther Technol 2004, 2:1

refers to article 1 from volume 2 of the journal.

As an online journal, SMARTT does not have issue numbers. Each volume corresponds to a calendar year.

To keep up to date with the latest articles from SMARTT, why not register to receive alerts? Registration also enables you to customise your subject areas of interest, store your searches, and submit your manuscripts.

Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to SMARTT using the online submission system. Full details of how to submit a manuscript are given in the instructions for authors.

General journal policies

SMARTT is published by BioMed Central, an independent publisher committed to ensuring peer-reviewed biomedical research is open access. That means it is freely and universally accessible online, it is archived in at least one internationally recognised free access repository, and its authors retain copyright, allowing anyone to reproduce or disseminate articles, according to the BioMed Central copyright and licence agreement. SMARTT however, has taken this further by making all its content open access.

SMARTT's articles are archived in PubMed Central, the US National Library of Medicine's full-text repository of life science literature, and also at INIST in France and in e-Depot, the National Library of the Netherlands' digital archive of all electronic publications. The journal is also participating in the British Library's e-journals pilot project, and plans to deposit copies of all articles with the British Library.

SMARTT is able to deliver summaries of frequently updated content via Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds. These are accessible via the orange "XML" button at the top of the list of recent articles or the list of most accessed articles. For more information about RSS feeds see our publisher's website.

If you would like to help raise awareness of SMARTT, why not download the journal's leaflet and poster? You will need Acrobat Reader to open them.
